Cision’s marketing staff headed to Wrigley Field last night for #CubsSocial. Aside from taking in a baseball game and getting cool T-shirts, we listened to social media tips from ESPN’s Mike Wilbon and Darren Rovell, while the ‘Voice of Wrigley’ Andrew Belleson moderated.
Here are some of the tips they offered to a crowd of social media marketers and enthusiasts:
- Retweets: Be extra cautious. Wilbon doesn’t retweet and understands that it works for other people, but for himself, he wants anything coming from his Twitter handle to be straight from him so there’s no confusion. With more than 1 million followers, it seems like his audience appreciates his strategy.
- Quality over Quantity: Rovell decides who he follows based on their content. He doesn’t follow the people who simply have a lot of followers. He says one of his favorite people to follow on Twitter is a young man with 2,000 followers who shares quality content. Rovell liked his content so much he got him a job.
- Add Value: Wilbon mentioned that too many people tweet just to tweet. If you don’t have anything relevant, funny or newsworthy to say, don’t tweet.
- Fact Check: When news breaks on something big, even if you think you are an expert in it, take a breath and wait for all of the facts. Rovell used the Boston Marathon bombings as an example. When that story broke there were all sorts of rumors flying around and some news organizations even tweeted incorrect information. Rovell knew it was related to him because it was a sporting event, but stayed out of the fray because the facts weren’t settled yet.
